# 0252 - T41 CR 320 PF 16 - Underprint Error
Confederate notes have a myriad of printing errors - inverted backs, missing printers, two printers, mis-matched plens, spelling errors, double ratification, double "FOR TREASURER" and many others.
Numerous individual states' currencies further contain overprint errors that often command much higher prices.
However, true overprint/ underprint errors on Confederate notes are very rare. There are two known T-43's with the TWO overprint inverted. One sold at auction for over $ 20,000.00. There is a T17 with a blue underprint (instead of green) which is valued similarly. Rumor has it that there is a note (possibly a T41) missing the underprint entirely.
I looked at a few hundred T41's in the auction archives. The location of the "HUNDRED" underprint is very inconsistent. On 3 or 4 notes, the shading below the underprint extended down to the signature line and the "HUNDRED" was about 3/16" above the signature line. Those may be considered to have misaligned underprints.
The underprint on this note goes beyond minor misalignment. The "HUNDRED" engulfs the signatures and the "FOR TREASURER" / "FOR REGISTER" statements . The shading below extends past the bottom frame line.
According to Roger Adamek in his 2024 Book " Interest Paid on Type 39, 40 & 41 Confederate Treasury Notes", this is a legitimate underprint alignment error. This "Low Tint Plate Position" Adamek describes is not unique to this note, but it is hard to find. The note pictured in Roger's book has the underprint about 1/8" lower than this one.
The fact that this one grades 64 EPQ does not hurt a thing.
