This 311 is beautiful. Vibrant printing, full borders and only one small "as made" crease to be found. Three pinholes are the only reason this note does not grade a 63 or 64.
The endorsement reads:
" Issued May 2, '63
Thomas D. Hamilton
Maj & acs"
According to Mike McNeil's new book this endorsement is a Rarity 13++. This note is one of only 4 known. To my knowledge it is unique in the aspect that it is the only known Hamilton issuance without a "Issued in Rome, Ga" statement.
The four known are:
* A T41 CR 310 - SN 619 - About Good - 3 or 4 ink burn holes and two corners missing - with "Rome, Ga" - Issued Mar 30, '63.
* A T41 CR 311 - SN 445 - VF - with "Rome, Ga" ( sold at auction for $ 3,600.00 in 2019 ) - Issued April 21, '63.
* This T41 CR 311 - SN 788 - PCGS 58 Choice About New - No Rome, Ga statement - Issued May 2, '63.
* A T41 CR 311 - SN 1200 - VF - with "Rome, Ga" ( sold at auction for over $ 3,000.00 in 2015 ) - Issued June 1, '63.
This note was undoubtedly issued in Rome as it was issued between two of the others and the unit was being held in reserve in Rome during that time.
It is very interesting that all four are on full written date notes. According to one of the trainmen, only Hamilton's manuscript issuance appears on 310's & 311's.
