This note is confusing. It appears to be an 18 plen printed over a C plen. I have heard the opinion of a well known dealer that the plen is altered - I disagree. The view from the back of the note shows that the entire plen is printed. There is no ink bleed through. Also, why would anyone alter the note to have half of a "C" ? I have compared, side by side, this note and one other note I have seen with the same 18/ half "C" and the two are identical. Also, both are under serial number 2000 which tracks to Thian and both have signatures that track to Thian.
There are also 16 plens with the half C.
According to Thian there were only 2834 "18" plens printed spread between the PF21 and PF24 varieties. That suggests a possible printing as low as 1417 for PF21 "18" plen.
Fricke gives the PF21 version a Rarity 9. I think they are harder to find than that - I have only ever seen 2. This note is F-VF - Fricke shows only a fine as the finest example so this may be the finest known.
